Nfinite Nanotechnology Secures NRC IRAP Funding to Scale High-Barrier Paper Packaging Platform

Nfinite Nanotechnology, an advanced materials startup based in Waterloo, Ontario, has received up to CAD 3.87 million in funding and advisory support from the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP). The support aims to accelerate the commercialization of Nfinite’s breakthrough ultra-thin coating platform, enabling high-barrier paper packaging as a sustainable alternative to flexible plastics.

Using its proprietary atmospheric pressure spatial atomic layer deposition (AP-SALD) system, Nfinite has demonstrated that paper packaging can achieve shelf-life performance comparable to metallized plastics. Miguel Galvez, CEO of Nfinite Nanotechnology, emphasized that this technology holds the potential to eliminate single-use plastics from the flexible packaging market.

The funding will support the deployment of Nfinite Nanotechnology’s  pilot production plant in Waterloo and aid in finalizing its first industrial-scale facility, expected to produce tens of millions of square meters of high-barrier paper annually. Strategic commercial partners include Amcor, PepsiCo, and Unilever, all collaborating on next-generation recyclable and compostable packaging solutions.

“Amcor is proud to be both an early-stage investor and strategic partner,” said Michael Hartman, Senior Fellow at Amcor. “Nfinite Nanotechnology’s AP-SALD technology shows strong potential to advance circular packaging solutions.”

Mark Newman, Head of Packaging, Advanced Materials at Unilever, noted, “High-barrier paper alternatives are crucial to reducing hard-to-recycle flexible plastics. Nfinite Nanotechnology’s technology aligns with our sustainability objectives while meeting performance standards across products.”

Sridevi Narayan-Sarathy, Technical Director / R&D Senior Fellow at PepsiCo, highlighted Nfinite’s rapid progression from lab-scale research to commercial-scale roll-to-roll coating, noting its potential to transform compostable packaging for snacks and other consumables.

Editorial Perspective

Nfinite Nanotechnology is positioned at the forefront of the sustainable packaging revolution, addressing a $270 billion flexible packaging market ripe for eco-friendly disruption. By combining advanced materials science with practical industrial applications, the company is not only creating environmentally responsible alternatives but also setting new performance benchmarks for the industry.

The collaboration with global giants like PepsiCo, Unilever, and Amcor underscores both commercial validation and strategic alignment. Nfinite’s AP-SALD technology demonstrates that innovation can meet consumer demand, regulatory requirements, and sustainability goals simultaneously.

As the company scales, the impact extends beyond commercial success; it represents a tangible step toward eliminating single-use plastics and advancing a circular economy in packaging. With strong leadership under Miguel Galvez and a clear roadmap to industrial production, Nfinite Nanotechnology is well-positioned to influence global packaging standards while contributing to environmental stewardship.
