Bio-Logical, a pioneering climate tech firm specializing in biochar carbon removal, has successfully raised $1.3 million in funding to amplify its efforts in combating climate change and enhancing the resilience of Kenyan smallholder farmers. This investment marks a significant milestone for the company as it gears up to expand its Mt. Kenya biochar facility, aiming to meet the surging demand for sustainable carbon removal solutions in agriculture.
The funds will facilitate Bio-Logical in scaling up its biochar production capacity, positioning it as a key player in global efforts to sequester carbon dioxide while concurrently fortifying the agricultural landscape against climate disruptions. By bolstering crop yields and fostering climate resilience among local farmers, Bio-Logical aims to address the dual challenges of food security and environmental sustainability in Kenya.
“Smallholder farmers, disproportionately affected by climate change, stand to benefit immensely from our biochar technology,” remarked Philip Hunter, Co-CEO of Bio-Logical. “Beyond carbon sequestration, our approach integrates soil-regenerating fertilizers that not only enhance agricultural productivity but also mitigate the impacts of climate variability.”
The funding round was spearheaded by prominent investors including CrossBoundary and Redshaw Advisors, alongside steadfast support from existing investor, the Steyn Group. This financial backing underscores investor confidence in Bio-Logical’s innovative approach and its potential to significantly scale carbon removal operations across Kenya.

Bio-Logical’s recent collaboration with Microsoft in 2023, which marked the largest procurement of biochar carbon removal from an African project, underscores its growing influence in the global climate solutions landscape. Looking ahead, the company plans to ramp up its annual carbon removal capacity to 100,000 tonnes of CO2 within the next 18 months, with expansions slated for three new sites across Kenya.
