AmphiStar Secures €2M Grant from SPRIN-D to Revolutionize Sustainable Surfactant Production and Drive Biotechnological Innovation

In a significant boost for sustainable innovation, Belgian biotech startup AmphiStar has been awarded a €2 million grant from SPRIN-D, Germany’s Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation. This funding marks a remarkable milestone for the company, bringing its total financing for 2023 to €10 million. The grant is aimed at advancing AmphiStar’s groundbreaking biotechnology platform, which harnesses synthetic biology to develop custom-designed molecules for various applications.

AmphiStar stands out in the realm of sustainable surfactants, producing tailor-made biosurfactants from organic waste and side streams. These innovative products serve as eco-friendly alternatives to both fossil- and biobased surfactants, providing new avenues for advancements in the cleaning, cosmetics, and personal care sectors.

The SPRIN-D grant is part of a highly selective multi-stage funding program supported by the German government, positioning AmphiStar among just six teams that advanced to the second phase, which focuses on disruptive innovations within biotechnology. Previously, the company secured €1.5 million in the program’s initial stage last year, and it is now in contention for an additional €2 million in the final round, to be awarded to two high-performing teams next year.

“This grant will enable us to push forward our most ambitious innovation goals,” said Pierre-Franck Valentin, CEO of AmphiStar. “With the freedom that non-dilutive funding provides, we can continue to develop and refine our bespoke, sustainable surfactants that meet the growing demand for high-performance, eco-friendly solutions in personal and home care. This support reinforces the German government’s recognition of our breakthrough technology and its potential to revolutionize the industry.”

Co-founder and COO Sophie Roelants emphasized the uniqueness of their technology: “What sets our technology apart is its ability to generate novel, high-performing molecules while keeping sustainability at its core. This grant enables us to concentrate on developing entirely new, promising molecules at low technology readiness levels (TRL), all produced from waste through a continuous biomanufacturing process.”

In a notable achievement, the AmphiStar team successfully implemented a continuous biomanufacturing process for 75 days—15 days longer than anticipated—using exclusively waste materials to produce a new and promising biosurfactant molecule. This advancement is vital for reducing costs associated with sustainable biochemicals, allowing them to compete in markets that prioritize functionality and affordability.
