Sora Fuel, an innovative startup specializing in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), has successfully closed an oversubscribed $6 million seed funding round. The investment was led by The Engine Ventures, with additional backing from Wireframe Ventures and other prominent investors. This funding will enable Sora Fuel to expand its Boston-based team, forge commercialization partnerships, and advance its groundbreaking technology.
Sora Fuel’s novel approach to SAF production involves capturing atmospheric CO2 using a proprietary liquid bicarbonate electrolyzer. This method significantly reduces costs and energy requirements compared to traditional direct air capture (DAC) technologies. CEO Gareth Ross emphasized the importance of their technology, stating, “Our patented, closed-loop system dramatically cuts the energy needed for DAC, allowing us to produce SAF at prices comparable to Jet A fuel while overcoming feedstock limitations.”
The aviation industry faces a pressing need to lower its carbon footprint, with aircraft currently responsible for 2.5% of global CO2 emissions. As air travel demand continues to rise, sustainable fuels are crucial for mitigating climate impact. Sora Fuel’s approach, which relies solely on water, air, and renewable electricity, offers a scalable and cost-effective solution to this challenge.
Michael Kearney, General Partner at Engine Ventures and a member of Sora Fuel’s board, highlighted the significance of this technology: “Sora Fuel’s innovative electrolyzer technology is a game-changer, enabling the creation of highly profitable SAF plants that can be located anywhere. Meeting the aviation industry’s environmental targets will require 500 million metric tons of SAF by 2050, and Sora Fuel is well-positioned to contribute significantly.”
Founded with technology from Curtis Berlinguette’s lab at the University of British Columbia, Sora Fuel boasts a team with deep expertise in chemistry and clean energy. Chief Science Officer Patrick Sarver brings a wealth of experience from Princeton University, MIT, and The Engine Ventures, while Gareth Ross’s extensive background in clean energy further strengthens the company’s leadership.
