The Universities Space Research Association (USRA) has announced the appointment of Dr. Walter S. Kiefer as the new Director of the Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI), effective June 24, 2024. Dr. Kiefer, who previously served as LPI’s Associate Director and Interim Director, brings extensive expertise in planetary geology and a distinguished career in space science research to his new role.
Throughout his career at USRA since 1993, Dr. Kiefer has been a pivotal figure in advancing planetary geophysics. His research spans the internal structures and evolution of terrestrial planets and large icy satellites, including Venus, Mars, the Moon, and Io. Notably, he has conducted groundbreaking studies on planetary gravity, topography, and volcanic structures, significantly contributing to our understanding of celestial bodies within our solar system.
Dr. Kiefer’s leadership extends beyond research, as he has served as a Principal Investigator for the Apollo Lunar Sample analysis, enhancing insights into lunar geology that have informed subsequent missions like GRAIL. His current roles as Co-Investigator on upcoming planetary missions, including DAVINCI, Europa Clipper, and EnVision, underscore his ongoing influence in planetary science and exploration.
“We are pleased to appoint Walter S. Kiefer as Director of LPI,” stated Bernie Seery, Vice President of Science and Technology at USRA. “His exceptional research contributions and strategic insights will undoubtedly propel LPI forward as a global leader in lunar and planetary science.”
Dr. Kiefer earned his B.S. in Physics and Astronomy from Texas Christian University and holds a Ph.D. in Planetary Science and Geophysics from the California Institute of Technology. He continues to serve as a key advisor to NASA’s Planetary Science Division and chairs the renowned Lunar and Planetary Science Conference.
